MPATH originated from engineer Mike Sewell's idea during a bicycle trip across the Netherlands. This experience contrasted sharply with his usual encounters in the US, prompting him to develop a quantifiable model based on actual user emotional responses. Through partnerships and data-driven approaches, MPATH offers a platform for understanding emotional experiences and utilizing that knowledge to create better-designed spaces.

The Empathic Insights app requests authentication for HealthKit workout activity, heart rate data, and each workout's location route data. This information is uploaded to the Empathic service for stress score processing, displayed in the mobile app's 3D map view. Users may opt into geolocated studies based on availability in their area.
